Pine Tree quilt design from a vintage quilt

 

There are many variations on the Pine Tree design. A Pine Tree pattern was published by Ruby Short McKim in One Hundred and One Patchwork Patterns in 1931.

McKim used a similar design for the first quilt pattern to be published by the Kansas City Star on Sept. 19, 1928. Publishing quilt patterns in the newspaper was McKim's idea. She was a quilt designer and friend of the editor of the Star’s women’s section. They thought running weekly quilt patterns in the paper might draw in more female readers. A similar series ran in the Denver Post.
